Katy works with folks across several industries which include sport, first responders, military & veterans- as well as within the corporate and professional (medical & law) world. Sport and performance clients include US Olympic and Paralympic Committee, USA Volleyball & Red Bull. She is a consultant to companies/organizations such as Washington State Parks and Vail Resorts for psychological support around incident response for life-threatening events. She is also an adjunct professor in the Clinical Psychology Department at the University of Washington.
Her conceptualization of how to develop and sustain excellence in performance begins with a consideration of both accelerators and decelerators of performance. In order to accelerate performance, an integrated and disciplined approach to the use of mental performance skills (i.e. breathing, imagery, mindset) is needed. To prevent deceleration of performance, it is beneficial to attend to fundamentals (i.e. recovery & restoration, mental health, major life events/transitions, sleep, culture). Some folks come to her to work only on the accelerators – and some only on decelerators, and some for both. She integrates evidence-based principles of psychology (i.e. performance optimization, mindfulness, grit, flow) to create tailored plans and programs for clients to experiment with, modify & execute. She believes progress in the domain of mental performance requires commitment, specificity & passion.
Her current practice is dedicated to working with hard-working & curious humans – some in the pursuit of excellence in their profession/sport- and some, passionate about the work of being human outside of their career fields- and some, both. Folks interested in working on the mental health piece of the puzzle need to reside in Washington state or a participating PSYPACT state.
Prior to her pursuits in the field of psychology, Katy was a CH-46 helicopter pilot and an officer in the U.S. Navy. Her undergraduate degree was completed at the U.S. Naval Academy where she played collegiate soccer. After serving in the Navy for a decade, she elected to pursue a doctorate in clinical psychology in addition to specializing in research and application principles in the performance and sports psychology realm. Her clinical psychology specialties include treatment of anxiety, depression, trauma & emotion regulation using interventions such as PE, CPT, DBT, ACT, & CBT. With first responder units, she emphasizes use of Psychological First Aid.
